Don’t miss the National Reining Horse Derby this June!

This summer, the National Reining Horse Derby returns to Oklahoma City from June 15th to 23rd! Whether you’re an avid fan of riding competitions or a newbie, this is an exciting event for everyone that really gets the community together!

What is a reining derby?

The National Reining Horse Derby is an exciting competition showing “the athletic ability of a ranch type horse within the confines of a show arena”. According to the official National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Handbook, this includes variations on small slow circles, large fast circles, flying lead changes, roll backs, 360 degree spins, sliding stops, and more.

About the event

The event spans from Saturday June 15th to Sunday June 23rd with all ages and levels competing at different times. Everything takes place at the State Fair Park, only a 10 minute drive or half hour transit ride away from Best Western Plus Saddleback Inn. You can watch both professionals and non-professionals compete in separate events, and even watch youth competitions of riders 10 years old and under. It’s an awesome way to experience a captivating sport that also captures the heart and culture of Oklahoma.

Other things to check out

Besides the competitions, the National Reining Horse Derby features other fun events to round out a fun-filled week. You can attend Cowboy Church on Sunday June 16th at 5:30 pm and check out the Pale Face Dunnit Ice Cream Party on Saturday June 22nd. There is also a tradeshow to check out with vendor booths and information about reining horses.
