June 2010 will see the return of the largest Native American gathering in the country, the Red Earth Festival. The Red Earth Festival over 100 Tribes from all over the North America to Oklahoma City. The city becomes a rainbow of headdresses and costumes with Native American music, dancing and parties throughout the weekend!
Established in 1987, the Red Earth Festival has grown to attract more than 2,000 Native American artists and dancers. Crowds of up to 100,000 watch the mammoth parade where dancers and tribal dignitaries march through the streets of downtown Oklahoma City!
After the parade, the biggest highlight is a whole series of dance competitions in a bewildering array of categories (Ladies Northern Traditional, Teen Girls Jingle, etc.) More than 200 Artists and artisans display their wares and art competitions take place in a dozen categories from painting under glass to hand thrown pottery!
